Refurbished Lacken Boardwalk Reopens

The Lacken Boardwalk in Kilkenny City has officially reopened, completing the scenic loop from Canal Square to the Dublin Road. Local walkers, runners, and cyclists can now enjoy this enhanced and environmentally friendly pathway. The walkway had been closed for refurbishment, which included the innovative and environmentally sustainable use of household waste and plastic waste to build the boardwalk.

Landscaping efforts, including the planting of approximately 2,500 native tree saplings such as alder, birch, hawthorn, willow, oak, and elderberry, will continue into early 2025. The landscaping will also feature the sowing of a native woodland seed mix.

The new boardwalk is designed to be more accessible for wheelchair users, those with reduced mobility, prams, and dog walkers.
