Kilkenny Ranked as One of Ireland’s Cleanest Cities in Latest IBAL Survey

Kilkenny has achieved a significant milestone in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey, being rated as ‘Cleaner than European Norms’ and securing second place out of 40 towns and cities. This accolade highlights Kilkenny’s commitment to maintaining a litter-free environment that meets and exceeds high international standards.

Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Mick McCarthy, emphasized, “Our aim is not just to meet standards but to set them.” He credited the community, local businesses, and residents for their collective efforts in achieving this ranking.

Kilkenny’s strong performance was further validated by the An Taisce report, which noted that eight out of ten surveyed sites received the top litter grade, with no heavily littered sites. Top-ranking sites included the Bottle Bank at St Canice’s Car Park, St. Kieran’s Street, The Mall, High Street, and Kilkenny Castle Park. These sites were praised not only for their cleanliness but also for their excellent overall presentation and maintenance.

Cllr Maria Dollard, Chairperson of Keep Kilkenny Beautiful, expressed her gratitude, stating, “On behalf of the committee and volunteers of Keep Kilkenny Beautiful, I want to welcome our ranking as second out of 40 cities and towns and acknowledge our rating as ‘cleaner than European norms’.” She highlighted the ongoing efforts of volunteers who contribute to maintaining Kilkenny’s reputation as a great place to live, work, and visit.

Overall, Kilkenny’s consistent high ranking in the IBAL surveys underscores its dedication to environmental stewardship and community involvement in keeping the city clean and beautiful.
